The Edge 50 Pro and Edge 50 Ultra are two new smartphones that Motorola recently released. Both of them are high-end Android phones made to rival devices of the same caliber as the Google Pixel 8, the Galaxy S24, and others. Despite having identical names, the two Motorola phones offer different functionality.
DESIGN
The more expensive Edge 50 Ultra smartphone will undoubtedly get more attention than the other one. The phone is available in three eye-catching colors: Nordic Wood, Peach Fuzz, and Forest Gray. However, color isn’t the only factor that separates them. The first two are brilliant, vivid orange and deep, dark grayish/green vegan leather backs. Furthermore, the Nordic Wood variant has actual wood, exactly as the older Moto X series phones.
The Edge 50 Ultra is available in all variants with IP68 dust and water protection, sandblasted aluminum frames, and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus on the display. With a diagonal measurement of 6.7 inches, the OLED panel display has a resolution of 1220p (2712 x 1220 pixels), compatibility for HDR10+, a refresh rate of 144 Hz, and a peak brightness of 2500 nits.
It should come as no surprise that the Edge 50 Pro has some compromises given its roughly $300 less price tag. For instance, there are numerous lovely vegan leather types available, such as Black Beauty, Luxe Lavender, and Vanilla Cream, but there isn’t a wood panel version. Additionally, Motorola offers a gorgeous handmade Moonlight Pearl design that is made in Italy.
The Edge 50 Pro has the same 6.7-inch display as the Edge 50 Ultra, even though it costs less. However, its peak brightness is just 2000 nits. Additionally, the phone is rated IP68 for water and dust protection. In this regard, the Edge 50 Pro is strikingly close, especially given the significant price difference.
PERFORMANCE AND BATTERY LIFE
The Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chip, which powers the Motorola Edge 50 Ultra, offers 12GB/16GB of RAM and 512GB or 1TB of storage. Up to 50W of wireless charging and 125W of cable charging are supported by its 4500mAh battery. In contrast, the Edge 50 Pro has 512GB of storage, 12GB of RAM, and an older Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 chip. The Edge 50 Ultra’s battery and charging parameters apply here as well.
The Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chip, which outperforms the Edge 50 Pro in this regard, is the Edge 50 Ultra’s primary advantage. In comparison to the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3, the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 offers improved graphics capabilities for demanding apps and gaming, quicker app loading times, and more seamless multitasking.
The Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 has faster memory bandwidth and a faster Processing clock speed. Based on speed testing, the battery life of both devices should be comparable.
Since the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 is still an adequately powerful chip, we don’t expect the Edge 50 Pro to be a sluggish smartphone. Additionally, it has very identical features to the Edge 50 Ultra in terms of RAM, storage, battery life, and charging. If you want the most powerful Motorola phone available, the Ultra is the one to choose, but choosing the Pro won’t leave you without too much.
CAMERA
The camera configuration on the Motorola Edge 50 Ultra is amazing. It has three cameras: a 64MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom, a 50MP ultrawide camera with autofocus, and a 50MP main camera. In addition, the front camera has a 50MP sensor.
The Edge 50 Pro boasts a 50 megapixel primary and front camera, but a 13 megapixel ultrawide and a 10 megapixel telephoto camera. The Edge 50 Ultra costs more than the Edge 50 Pro mostly because of this and the chipset.
The Edge 50 Ultra clearly has certain benefits in this area. Although the ultrawide and telephoto cameras on both phones are fantastic, the Ultra’s sensors offer substantially more megapixels, which should translate into higher-quality and more detailed pictures.
PRICING AND AVAILABILITY
It is essential to remember that these phones will not be widely available at first. They will only be offered in a few markets around Europe, Latin America, and Asia at launch; the United States will not be one of them. But Motorola has promised us that the phones would be accessible in the United States by the year’s end.
While the Edge 50 Pro starts at 699 euros (about $744), the Edge 50 Ultra costs 999 euros (approximately $1,063). Four years of security patches and three years of Android upgrades are included with both models.
They fall short of what Google and Samsung have to offer on their most recent phones, the Pixel 8 and Galaxy S24, though. Seven years of Android upgrades and security patches are available for both of those phones.
