Tesla CEO, Elon Musk announced that the company will unveil its robotaxi this summer.
The X owner unveiled the August 8 release date in a recent post on the social media platform.
The billionaire businessman had previously talked about attempts to build completely autonomous Tesla cars and to progressively advance the Full Self-Driving Capability of currently available automobiles.
For Musk, the technological achievement has long been a goal. He has stated that human-driven cars would become less common as autonomous taxis gain popularity, and that automakers would be “worth basically zero.”
Musk stated in April 2019 that he anticipated the Tesla robotaxis to be fully operational by 2020.
The firm projected that autonomous cars will last for 11 years and a million kilometers, generating a profit of $30,000 each year. He also revealed that a ride-sharing app, akin to Uber and Airbnb, would be installed alongside the automobiles.
As of right now, just a few select, experimental instances of self-driving cars on public roads have been authorized by Chinese and American authorities.
The automaker is dealing with legal action and inquiries regarding collisions involving its current Full Self-Driving and autopilot systems, which it claims were caused by careless drivers.
Musk made his remark in response to a Reuters story that claimed, citing three people with knowledge of the situation and company communications, that Tesla had abandoned preparations for its long-promised low-cost vehicle.
Reuters reports that investors had been counting on the initiative to propel its expansion into a mass-market manufacturer.
Musk frequently referred to the general public’s access to inexpensive electric vehicles as his main goal. He stated in 2006 that producing luxury vehicles had to come first in his “master plan” before funding a “low cost family car.”
