The president’s office in Sri Lanka, said on Thursday that the country has granted preliminary clearance for Elon Musk’s Starlink, the SpaceX satellite company, to offer internet services there.
Following Musk’s meeting with President Ranil Wickremesinghe in Indonesia last month during the 10th World Water Forum, Sri Lanka sped up the approval procedure.
Following a public consultation, Sri Lanka’s telecom regulator granted preliminary authorization, according to a brief statement from the president’s office.
According to the president’s office, Musk and Wickremesinghe had spoken about possible partnerships in the field of renewable energy as well as methods to increase internet access in rural Sri Lanka.
